When photographer Gabriela Reyes Fuchs placed her eye to the microscope to see her father’s ashes, she felt her head split open and her breath leave her. Behind a magnified dark particle, the brilliance emerged as in an eclipse, the background shifting from yellow to orange to red. ‘I had just lost one of the pillars of my existence, and suddenly to see so much light… I could not understand what was happening, and there was no one who could explain why,’ she recalls.
Before placing the milligrams of ash under the microscope, the scientists had warned her that the image would be monochromatic, in black, white, and shades of gray. Instead, what appeared was a nebula of colors…
